It would seem that Kevin Smith may be thinking about getting the band back together again for more time at the local Leonard Hills mall. Smith was talking about his upcoming projects, and dropped this slight nugget below:
We shoot CLERKS III in May. HIT SOMEBODY shoots September to Christmas. Then in Feb 2016, we do MOOSE JAWS. But after that? I smell a rat…

Now, first off, it’s only one tweet, so this is all speculation. His tweet however is one that worded very specifically. Kevin Smith knows his fanbase, and he has teased the idea of a sequel to Mallrats for many years. More recently on his Facebook page, Smith was also spending his time reminiscing about the film’s wrap up.
With Smith on such a creative bender lately, could he be really thinking about doing a sequel to Mallrats, just over twenty years later? Honestly, I would be surprised. With Smith getting ready to jump head first back into the View Askew universe with Clerks III, there’s a chance it really lit a fire inside of him to revisit Brody, T.S., Rene, Brandi, and the rest, much in the way that he is with his Clerks characters.
While a sequel to Mallrats may seem like a stretch for some because of its box office, it’s not really a huge issue. While the film didn’t do huge box office business, it was a breakout success on home video, much like most of Smith’s work, and has gained a very steady and rabid following over the years. Not to mention how popular the View Askew pictures really became, with films like Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and Clerks II helping expand on the universe, making it a sort of geek pantheon of fun.
Over the last few years, Smith has found himself creatively rejuvenated while working on his smaller horror/thrillers Red State, Tusk, and his upcoming film, Yoga Hosers. The fact that he’s flourishing so much, and cranking out such great films (Yes, I love both Red State and Tusk, I have no shame in that) in the process, makes the idea of Mallrats 2 that much more exciting. It would be great to see what kind of story Smith has come up with to bring these characters back now.
Really though, it won’t matter what it is, because it’s a Kevin Smith film, and I can’t wait to see what he does with it. Hopefully we’ll learn more soon about exactly what kind of rat Smith has his scent on. But in the meantime, we’ll have to wait and see what he does with Yoga Hosers, and wait patiently to see what he has up his sleeve for this new project.
