James Gunn Talks “Risky” Script For ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2’

Feb 9, 2015

James Gunn is working hard writing the script for Guardians of The Galaxy 2 and he spoke on the podcast Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend (via Uproxx) confirming he’s almost ready to hand-in a first draft of the script to Marvel.

Here’s what James had to say about the sequel revealing he’s created an original story and will indeed involve Peter Quill’s father.

“It’s not really based on anything. The story for Guardians 2 is an original story that I came up with that I started working on actually while I was shooting Guardians 1, and it’ll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill’s father and who he is and what’s going on with that. We’ll get to know some of the characters a little bit more and then we’re going to meet a couple of new characters who will be very important to Guardians movies and probably important to the Marvel Universe as a whole.” […]

It’s different than what’s in the comic books. Peter Quill’s father is somebody different in the comics. So then when the movie came out, we got green-lit on the sequel right away. I went in and I sat down with those guys and I’m like, ‘Okay, here’s what I think the sequel should be.’ And they were like, ‘Oh, whoa. That’s risky, but okay.’ Now I’m going to turn over the story in a few short weeks and we’ll find out how well it works.”

Gunn reaffirming that Quill’s dad won’t be the same character seen in the comics. This means almost any male character in the cosmic universe could be his daddy and I have a sneaking suspicion it could be a high-profiled character we’ve all been expecting will join the franchise’s lineup.

Thanos played by Josh Brolin is expected to have a larger villainous role this time around.

I wouldn’t be entirely shocked if Adam Warlock turns out to be the father of Peter Quill or someone just as well-known, killing two birds with one stone. There’s been speculation for a while now that Adam could be Peter’s dad shaking-up established comic lore.

Switching-up the parenthood of Quill could ruffle feathers but if it gives Warlock (or another cosmic character) a stronger backstory it couldn’t hurt things in the slightest. Cohesiveness has been the mantra at the studio and to tinker with Warlock’s character history wouldn’t be that terrible.

Another “risky” move could be having father and son close in age actor-wise since Warlock could have a slowed aging process due to many cosmic factors.

Warlock’s cocoon form was seen in Guardians and the button scene at the end of Thor: The Dark World which was in the hands of The Collector, who knows how long it’s been sitting there. It’s possible that after the explosion Adam could have been freed and he’s walking around Knowhere.

The character has been an established member of the team along with being a key figure in the Infinity storyline which is likely the basis for Avengers: Infinity War in 2018. Gunn could be referring to Warlock when he mentions a character being  “important to the Marvel Universe as a whole”.

I could totally see Warlock and Howard The Duck hanging-out at the Boot of Jemiah since the pair enjoy a stiff drink. The Guardians do end-up returning to Knowhere setting up their homestead there so having them bumping into Howard and Adam is extremely likely.

Adam even has a cigar smoking space troll side-kick named Pip who would seemingly fit-in right alongside characters like Yondu, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Howard, and even Cosmo.

I have my fingers-crossed that we’ll female characters such as Moondragon, Quasar and Angela join the film as well.

Guardians of The Galaxy 2 is expected to begin production in 2016 with a release date set for May 5th, 2017.
