ET caught-up with Aquaman director James Wan at the Australians in Film Awards Gala and gave a tease of what fans can expect from the tone of the film. Along with invoking classic adventure films Romancing The Stone and Raiders of The Lost Ark that had both strong female and male heroic leads.
“I kind of don’t want to give too much away but know this: The spirit that I’m going for is like a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story,” Wan shared. “It’s ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone.”
The comparison to Raiders and Stone likely refers to how the two action leads start-off hating each other and by the end of their adventures fall in love. They are also after a piece of treasure, which likely explains treasure hunter villain Black Manta‘s role in the film.
Jason Momoa, Amber Heard and Willem Dafoe will star and make their debut in Justice League.
Aquaman is said to begin shooting next year with it’s release date set for July 26th, 2018.
