Josh Boone To Direct X-Men Spinoff ‘New Mutants’; Is This Our Reboot?

May 13, 2015

Breaking news coming from Deadline that Fault In Our Stars director Josh Boone is set to co-write and direct the X-Men spinoff New Mutants for 20th Century Fox. Franchise producer-writer Simon Kinberg will be involved as producer, I would assume he’ll be contributing creatively as well. We’ve been hearing about plans for a New Mutants film just as long as we have for Deadpool and Gambit, but this is our first hint of it actually coming together. Boone will be co-writing the film with Knate Gwaltney.

The director had also been looked at by Sony and Marvel Studios to helm their Spider-Man reboot. Here is what producer Simon Kinberg had to say about the project.

“We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”

I recently pointed out how Fox has been slowly building-up to a New Mutants movie via in X-Men: Days of Future Past and how it could lead to becoming it’s own franchise. Three team members were introduced in the future scenes with Warpath, Blink, and Sunspot, it’s possible that Bishop could be apart of that lineup as well. The idea might be to see Cable and Domino as the new mentors/leader figures of this new team of young mutants, and quite possibly might be how Fox reboots the franchise for future installments, without the current cast.

I even suggested that New Mutants could easily take the place of X-Men 4, which according to rumors may never happen due to actors retiring from the franchise or being replaced. There has also been talk that the studio could be rebooting Bryan Singer’s X-Men universe after X-Men: Apocalypse and Wolverine 3, this could be New Mutants and X-Force. It all depends on what comes out first, and it’s looking like New Mutants could be the first post-Singer X-Men film.

Fox luckily has a whole untapped wave of mutant characters from these other X-Men offshoot teams like New Mutants to help move the franchise forward with a reboot. We could be seeing mutants like Shatterstar, Boom-Boom, Cannonball, Feral, RictorSiryn and Colossus’s sister Magik joining this new X-Men franchise.

I’m assuming that New Mutants could be eying Fox’s reserved release date of July 13th, 2018 which had be slated for a Marvel movie.
