Collider was able to sneak in a decent question during their interview with Marvel’s Kevin Feige during the Avengers: Age of Ultron press tour. They brought-up the recent rumor from Latino Review that they were considering having Adam McKay return to work for the studio in a much larger role, possibly writer and director, suggesting the project could be Inhumans. Adam co-wrote a draft of Ant-Man with actor Paul Rudd, and Feige admits they’re trying to find something else for him to do.
“Adam McKay is in the running for everything. Adam McKay is a great, great writer and director,” said Feige. “He did an amazing pass on the Ant-Man draft with Paul Rudd for us, and I didn’t know him before then. And we got to know him through that and liked him very much, and have met with him a number of times trying to find something else, so we’ve talked about a lot of characters with him.”
We’ve been hearing that Marvel is actually looking female directors for Captain Marvel, with Angelina Jolie currently the only name circling it, also talk the studio is considering minority directors to handle Black Panther. There hasn’t been any real rumblings concerning Phase Four films, and we know other people are being linked for Spider-Man including Daredevil‘s Drew Goddard. This possibly leaves Adam McKay with The Inhumans in 2019, which could be a huge undertaking and a big reason it’s release date is four years away.
The person who ends-up with the task of world-building The Inhumans will have to create a world almost equally as massive as Guardians of The Galaxy or X-Men. It’s writer and director will have to rein-in a huge group of superheroes and aliens, into one giant film. There’s been talk the project is a mix between X-Men and Game of Thrones, so the expectation is there will be many characters and many different arcs going on at once, lot to juggle for it’s creative team.
We know that Adam is used to larger casts with his work on Anchorman, he’s also someone like James Gunn or The Russos who could walk away making an impressive blockbuster. Marvel has had major success giving comedic directors big shots in their universe, and having McKay join the ranks feels like a smart move for the studio.
Adam is currently directing the comedy Daddy’s Home that stars Mark Wahlberg, Will Farrell, Age of Ultron‘s Linda Cardellini, Hannibal Buress, Paul Scheer and model turned actress Alessandra Ambrosio, who recently joins Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.
