Kevin Feige Reveals When They’ll Announce ‘Captain Marvel’ Lead and Director

Apr 12, 2016

Kevin Feige has been commenting on when Marvel Studios will make announcements concerning the next wave of new films to Collider. Another interesting tidbit is when they’ll reveal who will direct and star as Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel.

“I think we’ll be announcing a filmmaker in the next month or two, and probably some cast members later in the summer, at the end of the summer.”

The impression we’re getting is that Marvel could announce or introduce the Captain Marvel actress at San Diego Comic-Con in July.

It’s been said that directors such as Selma‘s Ava DuVernay and Unbroken‘s Angelia Jolie might have been eyed to direct at different times. Although, nothing recently has pointed to either of them actually landing the gig.

I’ve heard Marvel is aiming to look at mostly writer-director candidates for future projects and DuVernay has written recent television projects Queen Sugar and Battle of Versailles. It’s unknown if she’s still open to the idea, but her writing attributes could be seen as a huge edge for the director.

Then again, the studio could have moved on to other directors by now.

We’ve assumed that the actresses that would be in the mix would have massive heat over the last year or so, as Marvel bases new casting on actors with huge awareness.

Potential ladies that we’d expect to see in that running include rumored candidates Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road, Prometheus, Fast 8) and Rebecca Ferguson (The Girl On The Train, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation).

We’ve pointed out that recent Oscar winner Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island, Scott Pilgrim, Room) could be a strong contender after her win.

Jurassic World‘s Bryce Dallas Howard revealed an interest in the role earlier in the year.

Another name people haven’t been bringing-up is Star Wars: Rogue One actress Felicity Jones, who could become quite in-demand soon.

Emily Blunt (Sicario, Looper, Edge of Tomorrow) was looking like a lock a while back, but that doesn’t seem to be case.

The Force Awakens and 12 Years of Slave actress Lupita Nyong’o was revealed yesterday as a potential candidate for the female lead in Thor: Ragnarok, which gives the impression she could be now in the running for Danvers role or something else Marvel related in the future. She’s yet another actress with massive heat behind her after winning an Oscar and being apart of two massive Disney movies with Force Awakens and the upcoming Jungle Book.

Creed‘s Tessa Thompson landing the assumed superhero role in Ragnarok, which is said to be replacing Natalie Portman.

Lupita and Ava DuVernay are working together on the Amblin Entertainment sci-fi film Intelligent Life co-written by Jurassic World and Star Wars: Episode IX‘s Colin Trevorrow. Having them reunite for Captain Marvel could be magical, but it’s only a personal opinion at the moment.

An employee at a department of the United Nation that monitors Outer Space inadvertently makes contact with a beautiful woman, who may be an alien.

It’s release date is set for March 8th, 2019 giving the studio plenty of time to give a director time to develop the project creatively or complete other projects they’re already attached to. Production seemingly wouldn’t need to start until early 2018.

There’s also been some rumblings that Carol could first make her MCU debut in Avengers: Infinity War, said to begin production this fall.

Who would you like to see direct and star in Marvel’s Captain Marvel?
