Last month, Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch teased to Empire Magazine about his possible participation in Avengers: Infinity War, but didn’t come out and confirm it.
“To get us all together will be quite something. That’s why this character is being introduced, to open up the next chapter. So watch this space to see how that unfolds.”
Now, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is giving some weight to the speculation as it sounds like Benedict will indeed be apart of the cast. He mentioned them during a recent press conference (via Screen Rant) that members of The Illumnati will be featured in Infinity War.
“Well, what’s fun about the Illuminati is that there are certain characters interacting with other certain characters, so I don’t know about that particular storyline, but certainly some of those characters you will see on screen in the next Avengers.”
We expect they will include established characters like Tony Stark and Doctor Strange.
The key thing here is that this could mean we might be introduced to Namor The Sub-Mariner and The Inhumans‘ Black Blot. It would help setup their Inhumans film and we’ve heard from writers Christopher Marks and Stephen McFeely that they are interested in adding Namor to the films.
Due to rights issues with Fox it seems very unlikely we’ll be seeing Reed Richards and Charles Xavier on the roster, I wouldn’t be surprised if Black Panther took a spot.
The group is a collection of the best minds on Earth and are responsible for Hulk’s banishment from Earth that led to the events of Planet Hulk and World War Hulk.
This yet another hint along with the inclusion of the Planet Hulk story into Thor: Ragnarok, that Marvel could be attempting to setup the untitled Avengers 4 as Avengers: World War Hulk.
We’ve assumed that a majority of the Avengers lineup will be returning and it’s been confirmed that the Guardians of The Galaxy will be apart of the sequel,
It’s been confirmed by actress Evangeline Lily that Wasp will be sitting on the bench. Yet, will have a role to play as the superhero in Avengers 4.
This also begs the question, will Ant-Man sit out as well?
Spider-Man actor Tom Holland recently seemed a little unsure if he’ll be apart of the film or not.
While many assume he will, it’s possible Sony might be hesitating about it and with talk of spinoffs (Silver Sable and Venom on the table) the studio might want to throw him into one of their movies instead. Again, Tom Rothman is now calling the shots at Sony and we’ve already been hearing that Spider-Man 2 is likely aiming for that July release slot in 2020 that Marvel has slatted.
Holland recently completed filming on Spider-Man, so Marvel might want to give the actor a big of a break.
Many others have speculated that the TV characters will also somehow factor into the film. Although, most of the talk from the actors and producers gives the impression this won’t be happening for this specific film, so don’t hold your breath.
The Defenders is set to begin shooting in New York City in November, the same time as Infinity War shoots in Atlanta. Shooting thirteen episodes is gruelling enough and it seems extremely unlikely they’d shoot movie scenes on top of that. There are also some strong creative reasons why Feige might want to distance his cinematic universe from Agents of SHIELD as well, as it’s perceived as the less than than top-notch quality.
To be honest, if they do plan on introducing both Namor’s Atlanteans and Black Bolt’s Inhumans, there isn’t much room for Marvel TV.
We’ll likely know a lot more about who is in and who is out concerning Infinity War, as the film begins production next month.
Doctor Strange is out on November 6th and Avengers: Infinity War is set for release on May 4th, 2018.
