‘Logan’ Exceeds Expectations By Earning $247M Worldwide Over The Weekend

Mar 7, 2017

Strong word of mouth, critical response and audience anticipation have seemingly led to one of the better openings for an R-rated film as Logan has landed the fourth largest opening weekend for an R-rated movie.

Box Office Mojo has listed the film’s actual box office returns, as it earned an impressive $88.4M domestically over the weekend adding almost an extra $20M on top of the original estimate of $70M. Its global total is now at $247M placing it number ten on the world’s highest grossing films of 2017. We suspect it should reach number one. We suspect it should reach number one edging out The Return of Xander Cage by next Monday.

This is impressive when you consider that Fox saw the film as a risky move and it took consistent pressure from Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold to get the film made their way.

The month of March will see the releases of Kong: Skull Island, Beauty and The Beast, and Ghost In The Shell but it’s looking like the R-rated option will give audiences another option to more family friendly films. There is a strong expectation that Logan will have legs both domestically and international.
