When it was revealed that Lucasfilm was going to develop a string of standalone Star Wars anthology films, fans began pondering what characters could get their own film.
It was finally announced that Rogue One, Boba Fett and Han Solo would be the first wave of standalone films, Fett placed on hold when director Josh Trank exited the project. Fans had just assumed that the studio would be developing a standalone featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi as many sites fuelled this desire with unconfirmed rumors this was the case.
However, Kenobi actor Ewan McGregor rightly mentioned in recent interviews over the last year that this isn’t really the case and has talked about lobbying the studio to consider it with his openness to reprise the role. Never mentioning that Lucasfilm was actually moving forward with it or even developing ideas.
We hadn’t heard a legitimate peep of anyone over at Lucasfilm taking this Kenboi movie seriously up until now, as it’s been announced that the studio is holding a braintrust meeting in January where they’ll take a look at future projects they want to put into development. It’s possible they could bring-up the potential, but as it stands this isn’t the case and a trade reporter suggests they might have other plans for the character.
“I have heard rumors that the one reason they haven’t moved sooner on Obi-Wan is that they’re not done with Obi-Wan quite yet in the Saga films. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see an Obi-Wan thing happen beyond Episode IX.”
I’m not entirely sure this rumor is legit, as Ewan isn’t doing more than a voiceover in future main saga films as far was we’re concerned. I just think the studio had a list of projects to start-off with originally and Kenboi just wasn’t one of them.Without writers ever attached to pen a film, it was never really in any sort of development phase.
Disney’s Bob Iger had suggested recently that a third standalone film had a writer and that it could be aiming for a 2020 release date.
It should be noted that screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan (Force Awakens, Han Solo, Raiders of The Lost Ark, Empire Strikes Back, Return of The Jedi) had been linked as a writer on the Boba Fett film, it’s unlikely he would have been replaced when Trank exited due to his longstanding roots with the franchise.
Kasdan tackled Boba writing him in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi along with the recent Han Solo script, so having him tackle another standalone with a character he’s written before wouldn’t be terribly shocking.
Both Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are apart of the Star Wars cinematic braintrust and have been involved writers room sessions previously brainstorming script ideas, they’ll likely will be attending this meeting of the minds in January along with studio head Kathleen Kennedy.
It’s more than likely that the next standalone film landing in 2020 is going to be Boba Fett, not Kenobi. Sorry folks.
