Marvel Studios Hires Screenwriters For ‘Eternals’ Movie – Will They Replace Inhumans In The MCU?

May 15, 2018

We had been championing the potential of turning Jack Kirby’s cosmic superhero team The Eternals into a Phase Four film for over a year. A cosmic race of gods that includes other Marvel characters such as Thanos, Starfox, and Hercules.

It was then recently reported by MCUCosmic that it was being developed into a feature film with Marvel’s Kevin Feige later confirming in an interview that they were indeed on the table.

HollywoodReporter now says that Marvel Studios has hired screenwriters Matthew Firpo and Ryan Firpo to pen the film’s script and it sounds like the wheels are in motion for a release within the next couple of years.

In comics lore, the saga of the Eternals began millions of years ago when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans, creating the super-powered and near-immortal beings and a more monstrous off-shoot known as the Deviants. The two races moved behind the scenes throughout human history while also engaging in Game of Thrones-style cosmic powerplays.

Among the characters are Ikaris, fueled by cosmic energy; Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans; and Thena, often mistaken for the Greek goddess Athena.

We have reason to believe that Guardians of The Galaxy 3 could be the entry point for the group which could include a reveal that Adam Warlock and Ayesha are part of the group.

Sersi also just happens to be a legitimate member of the Avengers in the comics.

Thanos is part of the Titan sect of Eternals and there also happens to be a cosmic version of Olympus (not unlike Asgard) that has another group of Eternals, that includes Greek gods and demi-gods.

It seems like the Eternals will likely replace Inhumans which was ruined by the ABC series, and it’s unlikely we’ll see the film side of things attempt a cinematic take any time soon. It leaves the door open for the Eternals to play a large role in Phase Four and it’s pivot to the cosmic side of the universe.
