Maz Kanata Featured in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Deleted Scenes

Jan 15, 2016

In an interview with Collider, SFX supervisor, Chris Corbould, states that the Blu-ray for Star Wars: The Force Awakens will have 10 to 20 minutes of deleted scenes, including one featuring Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o) fighting stormtroopers.

"I see your eyes. I know your eyes."

“I see your eyes. I know your eyes.”

As Corbould describes:

There was a particular part of a scene that never made it, where they go underneath the castle and they’re going into the underground passageways, and stormtroopers are coming down the stairs and Maz uses her powers to collapse the ceiling.

From my point of view, [that] worked absolutely brilliantly because you had all the main actors running up and then Maz does her bit and then the whole ceiling collapses in front of them, but that never made it. That was a shot I was quite proud of, actually, it worked really, really well.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (directed by J. J. Abrams) hit theaters Dec. 18, 2015, and has already grossed about $1.8 billion worldwide.

As a new addition to the franchise, Maz is already a fan favorite, so more detail into her mysterious background is exciting. It will be interesting to see what powers she has and how they tie into the force, if at all. Seeing more of Maz is definitely something to look forward to.
