Mutants Perfect For X-MEN APOCALYPSE’s Setting Of 1983

Feb 25, 2015

We’re starting to get a real sense of the characters Bryan Singer hopes to include into X-Men Apocalyspe, which he’s been confirming multiple times is set in 1983. New/rebooted characters include Apocalypse, Storm, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, and possibly a new version of Angel/Archangel.

Singer hasn’t rebooted the timelines to the point it means characters will be born earlier, so this likely rules-out appearances by characters like Rogue, Iceman, Colossus, Kitty, Warpath, Bishop, Sunspot and Blink. That’s unless they bring back time-travel or establish some of the mutants have a slowed aging and are way older than they appear.

Cable and Forge are characters that could easily mean time travel becoming a tangible device in the film, as Forge creates a working time machine in the future.

However, there are bunch of characters that could be perfect for the setting of the 1980’s and I’ve come up a solid list of mutants I’d love to see apart of this film, even if it’s starting to get crowed.

I’ll start off with Jubilee the spunky upbeat runway teeny-bopper (seen in the header image) who proved a very eye-catching fashion sense. I know they want a darker tone for this one but finally giving actual lines would be worthwhile. Let’s not forget she almost was apart of X-Men Days of Future Past as concept art featuring her character was created but never used. While some might say she’s very 90’s I’ll argue she has more in common with the new wave girls of the 8o’s, plus arcades were more common in the 80’s which I’d imagine she frequents being a huge mallrat.

Gambit was established as running around in the 80s as an adult via X-Men Origins: Wolverine. We know that the studio wants to exclude that from canon which is fine by me but Gambit seems like a well travelled old soul. If anyone should be granted a long life similar to Logan it should be him, since his connections to Apocalypse it would be upsetting to so him play one of the Four Horsemen in the film and presumably take Wolverine‘s spot on the group as Death.

Bryan Singer also mentioned months back the desire to actually use Gambit since he was never able to find room for him in the first X-Men films, instead giving Remy a small Easter Egg in X-Men 2 establishing him with previous ties to Stryker. Having Channing Tatum now in the role and the solo film expected to be released months after Apocalypse I’m sure Fox wants him to cameo if only to help promote the Gambit movie.

His character design is a bit of a homage to Highlander or Terminator‘s Kyle Reese for sure.

Psylocke‘s costume is a bit crazy for the cinematic universe but she’d make an excellent addition and if don’t end-up having her apart of the X-Force they better damn well include her in Apocalypse. The great thing about a character like her is that she’s been two people the British spy Elizabeth Braddock that develops telepath powers and eventually has her minded placed into body of a Japanese mutant Kwannon, becoming a badass ninja and X-Men member. They could easily make her an MI6 peer of C.I.A. Agent Moira MacTaggert who is returning.

She’s was given a lousy cameo in X-Men 3 and the less we talk about that film the better.

We could easily have the Elizabeth Braddock spy version in Apocalypse then down the line in X-Force having her badass Japanese version explored.

It’s hard to talk about a film with Apocalypse movie without mentioning Nathan Summers aka Cable. The dude was created by Mister Sinister as a mutant able to defeat his villainous rival Apocalypse. He was inspired by characters from Terminator and Aliens mashed into a cool-as-hell looking brawling silver-haired time-hopping badass. One of the few popular male X-Men characters yet to grace the franchise.

He would eventually lead teams like the New Mutants and X-Force eventually becoming the unintentional team-up partner of Deadpool. He’s one of the few remaining male X-Men characters that could head-up their own franchises and they’ve been talking about how to approach/introduce him for years.

Again, Apocalypse lends itself to all sorts of things including bringing back time-travel via Forge’s time machine along with Sinister’s cloning/genetic experiments. I’m fine if Cable sits this one out but damn would that be a missed opportunity for Fox to setup this potentially massive character.

X-Force member Shatterstar could be even more 80’s than the other characters I’ve listed based on his wild look alone. He’s also one of the rare gay comic book characters Marvel has and while that might have been extremely taboo in the 60’s and even 70’s, the 80’s was a bit more open to that. The entire comic book series has been about inclusion and yet we haven’t had a single gay character, although a gay director and actors have be apart of making the films for ages.

It’s about time these films started giving us more characters representative of the rest of the population and Shatterstar is so against the stereotype he’d be perfect. The 80’s was also the era that gave us the Village People, so this isn’t a huge stretch of the imagination.

Come on 20th Century Fox let’s make this happen!

Considering the setting the 80’s I’m curious if Apocalypse will try to used the Legacy Virus which was the X-Men equivalent to the AIDS/HIV virus for the mutant popular. It was accidentally unleashed onto the mutant popular by Mister Sinister killing a bunch of mutants then starting to attack humans including Moira MacTaggert who is confirmed to be returning for Apocalypse.

And finally the mutant pop sensation Dazzler who producer Simon Kinberg said they might be considering adding to the film. She’d add a musical element to the film and there’s some hope on my part that they do end-up incorporating music from that era for the film. Casting an actress who can sing would be a bonus.

May I suggest someone like Scott Pilgrim‘s Brie Larson?

Who do you want to be apart of X-Men Apocalypse and what do you think of these suggestions?
