Mythical creatures and legends have long captivated audiences, inspiring filmmakers and creators across various entertainment mediums. From the heroic tales of Ancient Greece to the fearsome dragons of fantasy worlds and the mysterious trolls of folklore, these myths have been brought to life with creativity and flair.

In film and television, they’ve been portrayed in diverse ways, from epic dramas to fantastical adventures, and even modern satire. Beyond the screen, these legendary beings continue to inspire board games, iGaming, and immersive experiences, proving the timelessness of mythological storytelling.

Ancient Greece

Ancient Greek mythology has long been a source of inspiration for filmmakers, blending historical epic with high fantasy to captivate audiences worldwide. These stories, rich with gods, heroes, and legendary creatures, offer a perfect opportunity for adventure as films explore legendary tales like Perseus’ clash with the mysterious Medusa, and Jason’s quest for the Golden Fleece.

The box office smash hit Troy, released in 2004, reimagines Homer’s Iliad with a focus on human drama, stripping away the gods to present a grounded portrayal of the Trojan War, while 300 embraces a stylized, fantastical retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae, prioritizing visual spectacle over historical accuracy.

These myths have also appeared in other forms of entertainment. Board games like Mare Nostrum, Perikles, and Cyclades are popular with strategy enthusiasts, while TV’s Kaos sees Zeus and other Greek Gods in a modern world.

Dragons

Among the most memorable dragons in film or TV is the alpha dragon from 2002’s Reign of Fire. This post-apocalyptic thriller sees dragons emerge from the depths of the London Underground to reclaim the Earth and stars Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale.

Of course, no discussion of dragons would be complete without Game of Thrones, where, for example, Daenerys Targaryen’s three dragons – Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion – symbolized her rise to power. Their tragic fates, from Viserion’s transformation into an undead ice dragon to Drogon’s grief-stricken destruction of the Iron Throne, solidified their place among the most memorable dragons in film and television history.

Elsewhere, in iGaming, the dragon theme has become popular amongst slots players with the jackpot machine game Dragons Clusterbuster boasting lots of interesting features, such as colored dinosaur eggs hatching to trigger different bonuses like multipliers. Others like Dragons Lock and Dragon’s Fire Megaways continue the trend alongside live casino games such as the baccarat-inspired Dragon Tiger Live. From much-loved literature to classic board games like Runebound, Blue Moon, and Defenders of the Realm, these fire-breathing creatures continue to inspire our imaginations.

Trolls

Trolls have been portrayed in film and TV in both horrific and comedic ways. Some of the mythical creatures’ most memorable outings however have been of the darker variety. 2010’s Troll Hunter redefines the creature through a found-footage style, presenting trolls as massive, ancient beings hidden within Norway’s rugged landscapes. Its documentary-like approach and realistic special effects create an immersive experience, mixing dark fantasy with cultural satire.

This theme has also inspired the slot game of the same name by Play’n Go as well as the urban entertainment game by Questo – Wonders of London Bridge: Troll Hunt – in which players are guided by a mobile app, solving puzzles and riddles along the way.

Legacies Endure

As these ancient stories evolve through contemporary retellings, they maintain their power to enchant and inspire, bridging the gap between past and present. Whether through cinematic spectacles, strategic board games, or interactive digital worlds, myths of gods, dragons, and trolls continue to capture our imaginations.
