‘New Mutants’ Casting Call Teasing Armor or Karma?

Jun 13, 2017

Our friends over at ProjectCasting have a new casting call, and it looks like another one for Josh Boone’s New Mutants. They also cited us for revealing this untitled project is most likely New Mutants, so a big thanks to them.

The site seems to be unaware of what these two roles could be but we have a good idea.

One role is obviously a young version of Anya Taylor-Joy’s Illyana aka Magik. While the second one could more than likely be teasing a young X-Men character like Hisako Ichiki aka Armor or founding member Xi’an Coy Manh aka Karma.

SEEKING: [These are principal roles…]

YOUNG ANNA – Female, 9 – 12; preferably blonde, or willing to temporary color; Russian accent or Russian language skills.

YOUNG FEMALE – 18 to 22 years old; Asian

Scheduled to shoot in MA for one or more days between 7/20 and 8/16.

Karma is a mutant endowed with the ability to seize control of another’s mind, though she has sometimes been depicted with other more extensive psionic abilities. The origin of the character relates to the Vietnam War, as she and her family were among the boat people fleeing the country shortly after the advent of Communism and in the wake of violence. She was one of the five founding members of the New Mutants.

Hisako can create and generate an enormously strong and impenetrable dark red-colored psionic exoskeleton body armor that grants her superhuman strength, reflexes, stamina, endurance, agility, dexterity, and durability. The body armor is depicted as enveloping her completely and protects her from tremendously strong and powerful attacks and greatly strengthens and amplifies the concussive force behind her unusually offensive and highly destructive blows.

Some had assumed that Japanese actress Shioli Kutsuna‘s casting in Deadpool 2 would be Armor, however, that role is more likely something brand new. Existing characters like Leyu Yoshida aka Sunpyreor a rebooted version of Yuriko Oyama aka Lady Deathstrike are also possible. As a character like Deathstrike (good or bad) would make a lot more sense for an R-rated film and has some loose connections to Deadpool more than a young X-Men member like Armor.

The New Mutants lineup could be a little more influx when a bunch of the members overlapped with early X-Force incarnations. Adding newer characters wouldn’t be such a bad thing if helps boost the diversity of the cast.

The cast consists of Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Henry Zaga, Rosario Dawson, and Blu Hunt. Production is expected to take place this summer in Boston with a release date set for April 13th, 2018.
