‘New Mutants’ Co-Writer Josh Boone Completes Second Draft Of Script

Apr 16, 2016

Josh Boone (Fault In Our Stars) has been busy co-writing the New Mutants script with writing partner Knate Lee and has updated about the new X-Men film via his Instagram account.

HitFix had recently reported that New Mutants would be seemingly a sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse as James McAvoy‘s Xavier and Alexandra Shipp‘s Storm would be reprising their roles in the film, refuting the claim it would be just a spin-off. Alluding the film is actually set in the 1980’s following the events of Apocalypse

Adding that new cast members could include Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane and Anna-Taylor Joy as Magik. They also mention New Mutants Cannonball, Sunspot and Mirage are other roles yet to be cast.

We have to assume that Fox is looking at the film as a priority if they’re already casting the film and with the second draft handed-in things are coming together quicker than we had expected.

Josh Boone is still stated as both the film’s writer and director, but will be directing Samuel L. Jackson in the Stephen King adaptation of The Revival next. Some suspect that Josh will have to put that project on pause or rush to complete it, as it seems that New Mutants could be ready to shoot sooner than anyone expected.

Fox announced a new release date in 2017 at CinemaCon this week for an unnamed Marvel film, which could either be for Gambit or New Mutants. As weird as it sounds, New Mutants having a bunch of rumored cast members linked and a second draft confirmed by Josh Boone, Mutants could end-up shooting/releasing before Gambit does.

Gambit‘s production has been delayed to the fall if not longer, as Magic Mike‘s Reid Carolin has been hired to do a final polish on the script while director Doug Liman has decided to make another film first.

I’m sure others are assuming the release date is for Deadpool 2, but Ryan Reynolds has a couple of films lined-up first which include the action flick Hitman’s Bodyguard (currently about to shoot), voice work on Croods 2 and the Mars thriller Life. The latter film as a script penned by Deadpool writers and will be directed by Daniel Espinosa, who worked with Ryan on Safe House.

Basically, Ryan’s 2016 shooting schedule is filling up quickly as all three project are expected for release in 2017.

Fox confirmed that the Deadpool sequel is currently being developed at CinemaCon with director Tim Miller working on it’s development with Reynolds, a production start or release date wasn’t made official. They don’t even have a script for the film and the writers have gone on the record they wanted extra time to complete it.

I do believe a lot of folks are mostly unaware the extensive time gap from production to release, the window tends to be one or two years, allowing for post-production time and marketing campaigns. With that in mind, Deadpool 2‘s production is rumored to start early next year and it’s unlikely the sequel could be ready for a 2017 release date.

To me, it looks like this 2017 release date is going to be set aside for either New Mutants or Gambit.
