Fresh off perhaps the best issue of the series, Chip Zdarsky and Jacob Phillips take readers down a different path with Newburn #6. While each issue of the series has been connected, most conflicts have been resolved within each chapter. However, that was not the case with Newburn #6.

Instead, this week’s issue is completely about setting the stage for another matter. In doing so, Zdarsky and Phillips bounce across a 16-year period, which is unlike anything they’ve done. Additionally, the focus is on a character new to the Newburn story. That does make things a little confusing at times. But, Zdarsky and Phillips provide enough detail to help readers get a grip on the situation.

That said, between the detail and the new characters, this is definitely a book you can’t read in one fluid motion. To be clear: The pacing is great, that’s not what’s being addressed. Newburn #6 is sound in that sense, just like the previous five issues. But this issue is one you’ll have to flip back and forth a lot while reading — much more than the first five issues of Newburn.

Although there are a few factors that can seem to slow this book down, the end of the issue made it all worth it. Newburn is going to have his hands full very soon.
