ZeietgeistEntertainmentMagazine (via MovieWeb) spoke with RoboCop and Starship Troopers screenwriter Ed Neumeier during an interview at the Barbados Independent Film Festival. Ed reveals not only is he working on a new RoboCop film with MGM but that it’ll have connections to the beloved cult classic original from 1987.

“Well, here’s what I’ll say. We’re not supposed to say too much. There’s been a bunch of other RoboCop movies and there was recently a remake and I would say this would be kind of going back to the old RoboCop we all love and starting there and going forward. So it’s a continuation really of the first movie. In my mind. So it’s a little bit more of the old school thing.”

Perhaps, MGM is noticing what is happening with Blade Runner 2049 and Tim Miller’s Terminator film, looking towards a direct sequel/soft-reboot instead of continuing that story from the 2014 RoboCop.

I’m hoping that MGM comes to their senses and hires Michael Shannon (Man of Steel, Midnight Special, The Shape of Water, Boardwalk Empire, Fahrenheit 451, 12 Strong) as the new Alex Murphy. Shannon is talented as hell and could elevate the material along with emoting behind the suit/helmet.
