Nicolas Winding Refn Working With ‘Bond’ Writers For Asian-Set Action Thriller
Deadline reports that Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn is teaming-up with Bond franchise writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade for an untitled action thriller said to be set in Asia. The screenwriting duo are most notably known for writing Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre.
Nicolas has been teasing over the last couple of years about dipping his toes into world of large action filmmaking, while he’s known for smaller films. He was hired to direct Ryan Gosling in Warner Bros’ reboot of Logan’s Run only to exit, had been in the mix to direct Sony’s The Equalizer, and once teased an interest in making a gritty Wonder Woman film.
His latest film Neon Demon has a stellar cast, which includes reenergized action star Keanu Reeves. We’ve seen Nicolas develop working relationships with his acting muses Mads Mikkelsen and Ryan Gosling, it’s possible that he could consider placing Keanu in a leading role, after the action film John Wick becoming such a cult hit and it’s sequel on the way.
Considering the film is said to be set in Asia, it would be a perfect opportunity to hire an Asian actor for the lead role, I’d love to see Daniel Wu (Into The Badlands, Warcraft, Europa Report, Protege) get the gig.
The Playlist is putting out the theory that this project could end up being Nicolas’ long in-development The Avenging Silence, which would focus on another strong-but-silent action lead set in Tokyo, Japan. He also admitted a desire to make a spy film too.
