‘Pacific Rim 2’ Starts Shooting In November; Working Title Is ‘Maelstrom’

Jul 21, 2015

Local news outlet Global has learned that Guillermo del Toro will begin production his sequel to Pacific Rim this fall at Pinewood Studios Toronto. Del Toro has shot both Pacific Rim and his upcoming horror flick Crimson Peak at Pinewood. They’ve also learned it’s working title is Maelstrom, this could be just a faux production title, similar to the false names given to movies to keep fans and reporters away from sets. Then again, it could be referring to a character or technology featured in the sequel, maybe a wormhole device?

A maelstrom (/ˈmeɪlstrɒm/ or /ˈmeɪlstrəm/) is a very powerful whirlpool; a large, swirling body of water. A free vortex, it has considerable downdraft. The power of tidal whirlpools tends to be exaggerated by laymen.

The assumption has been that they could be heading into space this time around, possibly defending Earth from the alien colonizers the Precursors.

Maelstrom will punch it’s way into theatres on August 4th, 2017.
