The original Pacific Rim was a surprise hit in 2013, earning an estimated $411 million thanks to the vision of writer/director Guillermo Del Toro and impressive performances from Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba. A sequel was announced that is written by Del Toro and will be directed by Daredevil Executive Producer Steven S. DeKnight.
One of the films stars, John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) has revealed the title of the sequel on his Instagram account as Pacific Rim: Maelstrom. Boyega joins the cast as the son of Idris Elba’s character Stacker Pentecost and the production is currently underway in Sydney Australia with an anticipated release date of February 23, 2018.
