Primordial #1

There’s no question when Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino team up on a book, you read it. With vibes of “Department of Truth,” Primordial #1 delivers a chilling look back at the space race, but with an ominous twist. Lemire, as always, is a master at creating characters and building stories that immediately reel you in. Primordial #1 does just that.

Space, monkeys and conspiracy, what’s not to love? With Primordial #1, Lemire takes readers back to a pivotal time in our country’s history to deliver a thrilling new series. From the outset, it is very clear something isn’t quite right. With a space program that is dead and the mysterious cause for it to disband, Primordial is set up to be a fascinating series.

In true Lemire fashion, nothing is quite as it seems. Primordial #1 is a great blend of a conspiracy story mixed with science fiction, sprinkled with a touch of horror. While the story really doesn’t take off until the last few pages, Primordial #1 never feels slow. Lemire has always excelled at keeping his readers engaged, no matter the genre. While other writers sometimes spend too much time world building, Lemire is able to do so while also keeping the reader fully immersed.

Sorrentino’s art in this first issue is a wonderfully wild ride. True to his style, there are moments where the art’s tone takes dramatic shifts, transitioning from a more traditional style to the abstract. Along with colorist Dave Stewart, these shifts in both style and color help increase the feeling of suspense and curiosity created by Lemire’s writing.

Overall, Primordial #1 is a terrific read that does its job perfectly. Primordial will have you hooked from panel to panel. With elements of suspense, mystery, and intrigue, Lemire and Sorrentino are once again firing on all cylinders.

Summary

In 1957, the USSR launched the dog, Laika, into Earth’s orbit. Two years later, the USA responded with two monkeys, Able and Baker. These animals never returned. But, unbeknownst to everyone, they did not die in orbit…they were taken. And now they are coming home.
