Review: Razer Ornata Chroma V2

Jun 17, 2020

Razer’s Ornata Chroma V2 is a solid upgrade from the original keyboard which launched in 2017. Razer have added media keys and a volume rocker, which were not present before. Other than that, it’s mostly the same with excellent backlighting that make the keys appear as if they were floating on clouds. Very neat. The keys themselves to have a different pop than before. They appear to spring back after actuation with more force, which I like.

The world is not devoid of mechanical gaming keyboards. There are many great options that should last users for several years. The Ornata is backed by mech-membrane keys which, according to Razer, provides a soft tactile touch with “a crisp tactile click.” They are certainly crisp and soft. Well done, Razer!

Note the Ornata V2 uses mid-height keys and includes a leatherette palm rest that connects magnetically to the plastic keyboard chassis.

How to Make an Awesome V3

The only gripe I have with the Ornata V2 is the media scroll wheel. It’s too weak. I would prefer a tighter click or at least an adjustable toggle. With that aside, there are two additional items on my wishlist: spill-proof the keyboard and make the palm rest magnets stronger. These aren’t gripes, they’re wishlist items – a little different. I recommend this keyboard despite those items.

One thing for the super wishlist

I can’t type on a keyboard with a standard layout for more a day or two without switching to an ergonomic keyboard. There are ergonomic mechanical keyboards out there, such as the Kinesis Freestyle, but we all need more choices so these companies push each other to improve. And to fully trick out my desktop setup with Razer Chroma – I need a Razer ergonomic keyboard. Let’s go Razer!
