There’s a report coming from New Zealand news site Stuff. They are hearing that Ridley Scott and the production of Alien: Covenant could be shooting some exterior scenes in New Zealand. Local chatter has started that some of the film could be shot in the Milford Sound area in Southland, but nothing has been confirmed by either the film community there or 20th Century Fox.
Scott has admitted taking a couple of overhead shots of New Zealand mountains for the landscapes of The Martian. The entire country is breathtaking and could be perfect for the setting of the Engineers’ homeworld of “Paradise”.
Production is expected to take place in Sydney, Australia on the Fox Studios stages, but could easily make the trek to New Zealand for a couple of scenes.
The cast hasn’t been finalized, but Michael Fassbender has been confirmed as returning as David. Inherent Vice actress Katherine Waterston has been reportedly set as the new female lead, with comedian Danny McBride (Tropic Thunder, Up In The Air) in talks for a role as well.
It was recently revealed that Noomi Rapace would not be returning as expected as Dr. Elizabeth Shaw.
This wouldn’t be the first time Ridley Scott filmed stage work in one country and then exterior shots in another. During the shooting of Prometheus, stage work was done in the UK and they ended-up shooting a bunch of shots in Iceland to represent the rugged alien planetoid surface of LV-223.
Could we see some engineers or xenomorphs coming to New Zealand?
We’ll have to wait for more concrete information, but usually we do see that local sources learn productions coming to their towns way before the big news outlets do.
