I’ve been hearing about a Robotech movie for close to a decade seeing it recently get resurrected feels like something that happens every couple of years but ends-up going back to limbo.
However, a new report suggests that a major studio has grabbed it and it might actually get made.
Variety reports that Sony has picked-up Robotech movie for franchise potential. Remember, Sony’s restructuring was in hope to develop new franchise properties which they are lacking compared to their studio peers. Something like Robotech allows them to give audiences a big sci-fi tentpole feature which studios like Sony have a limited amount of, while Fox is doubling-down on the genre via Planet of The Apes, Avatar and the Alien universe.
Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox are ramping-up their science fiction releases, Sony in the meantime is losing Neill Blomkamp to Fox for Alien 5. They also don’t have a huge history of investing into the genre. It’s possible because of his conflicts with Sony’s new studio head Tom Rothman, Blomkamp could take his original films over to Fox.
Deadline had previously reported that a script is being developed Michael B. Gordon (300, G.I. Joe) with Andy Muschietti possibly directing it.
Rumors have suggested that Tobey Maguire (has been trying to produce the film for ages being his passion project) and his longtime friend Leonardo DiCaprio could be eyeing roles in the film. This might be outdated stuff but the pair did work together in the Great Gatsby.
I have to assume Maguire would easily sign-up for another franchise role, but slightly doubtful that the Oscar chasing DiCaprio would be willing to make multiple films after rumors of him turning down roles in projects like The Force Awakens and Captain America: The First Avenger. Oddly enough, Force Awakens writer Larry Kasdan once tried to develop the project unsuccessfully.
I could also see Sony pursuing a different cast as well.
