‘Rogue One’s Donnie Yen Is Interested In Playing Marvel’s Namor

Feb 19, 2017

Donnie Yen is currently on a hot streak with his breakout Hollywood role in the billion dollar hit Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. His other film xXx: The Return of Xander Cage is doing gangbusters in the overseas market, making Donnie a bit of box office draw lately.

Now, with rumblings from production sites like Reel News Hawaii and Production Weekly that Marvel is moving forward with a Sub-Mariner movie fans are getting behind Donnie for the role of Namor Mackenzie.

Yen’s official Twitter account is retweeting those posts and even gave the impression he was interested in the idea.

Donnie has been in the Marvel family for years being a cast member of Guillermo del Toro’s Blade 2 which had Kevin Feige as an executive producer before the days of Marvel Studios.

He wouldn’t be the only actor to make the switch from Star Wars to Marvel. Force Awakens actress Lupita Nyong’o and his Rogue One co-star Forest Whitaker are currently shooting Black Panther.

We’ve previously pointed out that Namor could easily be played by an Asian actor and could allow Marvel to save face for leaving out Asian major leads in their films. Also, the failed campaign to have an Asian-American actor in the Danny Rand part in the Iron Fist series.

There had been some teasers from Marvel folks that Namor could possibly appear in Avengers: Infinity War. Along with the film’s screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealing last year Namor is a character they’re most looking forward to writing for.

Brian Tee from Jurassic World and The Wolverine had previously expressed an interest in the role as well.

Marvel hasn’t made it public that a Sub-Mariner movie is indeed in the works, but they have three untitled movies slated for 2020. Anyone of those release dates could be set aside for a solo film as the Avenger and potential villain has been a hot topic lately concerning of who could show up in Phase Four.

Hiring Donnie Yen could be an extreme contrast to WB’s Aquaman played by Jason Momoa.
