With just a little over a month to go until X-Men: Apocalypse begins shooting, the film is locking down its cast for the ninth film in the X-Men franchise. The film already has returning stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Rose Byrne, and a rumored appearance by Ian McKellen, with new actors including Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Ben Hardy, Kodi Smitt-McPhee, and Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse joining the long running Marvel Comics based series.
Now it seems as two more names have been added to the returning cast list, and one new comer as well. Latino Review’s El Mayimbe dropped the new scoop on his Instagram account this morning. According to El Mayimbe, Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry will both return in small roles as Wolverine and Storm, while we’ll also be introduced to Channing Tatum’s Gambit as well.
None of this should really come as a surprise, as many of us have speculated we’d be seeing Jackman returning as Wolverine in the film, especially with where the last film left his character. He’ll be gearing up to begin shooting The Wolverine 2 soon as well, which means he’ll have to be getting back in shape for the role he originated all the way back in 2000, an incredible fifteen years ago. Jackman has been very open in recent months about wanting to stay with the series and playing the character as long as he can, and with his rumored appearance in Deadpool as well, as well as the aforementioned third solo film on the way, it seems we have quite a few films left with Jackman’s Wolverine.
Tatum’s Gambit showing up isn’t too surprising either, as he has his own solo film set for release next October. The best course of action is to introduce him in the big ensemble the May before, giving him a big break. If they give him a show stealing scene akin to what Quicksilver had in X-Men: Days of Future Past, especially with Channing Tatum in the role, it’ll leave the audiences wanting more, and giving his solo film mass awareness.
Bryan Singer previously stating that he was keen on using Gambit in Apocalypse even before Tatum had been confirmed and the Gambit film was announced by Fox.
“I’m considering a Gambit and potentially a young Nightcrawler for Apocalypse. [We were] going to have to Nightcrawler [in Days of Future Past] and even wrote a scene, but I felt that we were forcing too mutants known history.”
The only surprising casting return is Halle Berry’s Storm, who I wasn’t sure we would see again. Many, myself included, have heard conflicting reports from within the Fox camp that the studio intended for Days of Future Past to be a swan song of sorts for the original series cast, but with the film’s ending, they also leave the idea of X-Men 4 wide open to bring the original cast back for one last film together.
Then again, Storm and Logan have had a love story in alternative timelines and in a deleted scene in Days of Future Past was teased with a kiss.
I’ve heard rumors that Fox executives have become keen on the idea of a fourth film in the series, but right now Singer and his crew are working on finishing the First Class trilogy properly, while The Wolverine 2, Deadpool, and Gambit all move forward into production. While nothing has been confirmed as this point, the possibility is there, and with the likes of McKellen, Jackman, Berry, and Tatum, could the scenes in question be set up for something set in the future timeline? Whatever it is, there seems to be a lot to look forward to when X-Men: Apocalypse opens on May 27, 2016.
