Dwayne Johnson is being rumored as being wanted by Universal for the role of The Wolfman in their monsters cinematic franchise. Although, to be clear it’s only a rumor at this point and Deadline is not revealing too much more about the prospect of the role.
There are persistent rumors Universal wants him howling at the moon when it gets around to the Wolf Man movie that is part of its classic monsters franchise revival plans.
A big problem with him committing to the film is his many many other project lined-up at the moment. It’s said to have a new release date of April 13th, 2018 with Prisoners screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski penning the script.
Just to recap what the current plan with their contemporary monsters universe.
Tom Cruise is leading The Mummy remake co-starring Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll and Sofia Boutella as the titular Mummy, which has a release date set for June 9th, 2017.
Johnny Depp is attached to play The Invisible Man being written by Ed Solomon (Now You See Me, Men In Black).
Angelina Jolie eyed for Bride of Frankenstein written by David Koepp (Indiana Jones 5, Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, Mission: Impossible).
Scarlet Johansson had been liked for the lead role in their Black Lagoon remake from writer Jeff Pinker (Fringe, Amazing Spider-Man 2).
Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange, The Mummy) and Eric Heisserer are currently writing the screenplay for the Van Helsing reboot, Cruise had been attached to lead it but exited to make The Mummy instead. The assumption being that it could include a new version of Dracula, or seeing Van Helsing hunting down vampires and other monsters.
Jay Basu (Metal Gear Solid, Monsters: Dark Continent) was also tapped to pen an untitled film that has a release date of February 15th, 2019. It’s possible the project could be a Jekyll and Hyde movie starring Russell Crowe.
Universal is betting big on the franchise, so hiring Johnson would be smart if they can figure out how to work it into his busy shooting schedule.
