Heroic Hollywood’s El Mayimbe was a guest co-host on Meet The Movie Press and was dropping some scoops on the show, on the show it was revealed by the other co-host from Schmoes Know that indeed Emily Blunt has been cast as Captain Marvel. Stating they’ve heard it’s a “done-deal”, while in the same breath stating it was only “speculation”.
The folks at Schmoes are excellent entertainment interviewers and panelists, but rarely drop their own scoops. As with all rumors don’t expect this to be 100%, along with keeping in mind Schmoes’ spotty record with scoops.
Mayimbe wasn’t really convinced of this when asked to comment, stating that Marvel was looking for a bigger actress, possibly naming Charlize Theron. Another name that has been making the rumor mill recently for the role. Adding, that the project doesn’t even have a director, while we know the Black Panther role was cast and that film also doesn’t have a director. There is some speculation Danvers could still show-up in Civil War, but like with all of this remains to be seen.
To sort of back-up this claim, rumors started back in late 2012 that Marvel Studios had been considering Emily Blunt for the role of Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel, this was even before their announcement last October that she’d indeed get her solo film in Phase Three. In 2012, the expectation was that she would join the Avengers in the second film, that role would eventually go to Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch instead.
We would even get confirmation from both Joss Whedon and Kevin Feige that Danvers was originally going to be first shown in Age of Ultron, but was replaced by Wanda.
Blunt also has casting history with Marvel, originally cast as Black Widow in Iron Man 2, but was pulled out of the project by Fox due to contract. She had also been in the mix for the Agent Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger role, but that didn’t work out either.
She’s mentioned in interviews waiting for a meatier role, and even teased an interest in playing Danvers a while back.
“[Laughs] ‘Captain Musical Marvel.’ Let’s just call Marvel about that right now. We’ll call Kevin Feige about that. “Kevin Feige, we have one hell of an idea.” Yeah.”
“I think, it’s always for me, it’s always about—and now, more so—what am I putting out there? What would be interesting for me and what would be interesting for people to see. So, if it’s an awesome part, it doesn’t matter if it’s a Marvel movie or a tiny movie, I’d be up for it.”
Blunt will be fighting the cartel in Sicario, which she co-stars with Josh Brolin aka Thanos, Benicio del Toro aka The Collector, and Jon Bernthal aka The Punisher.
Do you think Emily Blunt should play Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel, or should they hire Oscar winner Charlize Theron, who kicked major ass in Mad Max: Fury Road?
