RUMOR: Marvel Courting ‘Creed’ Director Ryan Coogler For ‘Black Panther’

Oct 15, 2015

So as Marvel tries to narrow down an African-American director for Black Panther another name has seemingly popped up. First we had heard Marvel contacted Selma director Ava DuVernay to helm their first black superhero film. Unfortunately, they didn’t see eye-to-eye ion the direction of the film and the director passed. Next many thought Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray would be the top of Marvel’s list but without a script in place the director also has (seemingly) passed to direct Fast and Furious 8.

Now, Heroic Hollywood is reporting that Creed and the critically acclaimed Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler is also on Marvel’s list to direct Black Panther. While the site stresses that Marvel has not offered the gig yet but simply mentions the company really wants a high profile director to take on this potentially massive franchise.

Black Panther has been moved up and will hit February 2018
