Could Ant-Man writer Adam McKay be getting a promotion over at Marvel Studios?
Latino Review is hearing that the comedic director is “on-deck” to helm an upcoming Marvel Phase Three movie. They go-on to exclude projects like Captain Marvel and Black Panther, which they state will be aiming at female/minority candidates. Hinting that the project could be actually The Inhumans that is slowly being setup in the series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
This isn’t too shocking since we’ve seen Marvel take large chances on mostly comedic directors with James Gunn shaping their cosmic universe with Guardians of The Galaxy, and the Russo Brothers now confirmed to be getting the keys to Avengers franchise via Infinity War. It won’t be a stretch to see a similar filmmaker like McKay being asked to develop their next MCU sprawling franchise like Inhumans. This could be the MCU version of the X-Men and might need a strong vision to develop it, along with collaborating with Agents.
Thor Ragnarok is still a possibility as well, however, that film seemingly already has a script and might need a different type of director. Considering they’re happy with his work on Ant-Man, the expectation is that he’ll be given a writing job as well allowing him more creative freedom, that wouldn’t be the case with this project.
Ragnarok‘s slightly darker subject matter along with being the end of a trilogy, not something that would allow McKay to world-build like other directors. He also doesn’t seem like a hired-gun to round-out the Thor franchise.
Inhumans is set for release date of July 12th, 2019, giving Marvel plenty of time to figure things out.
