RUMOR: ‘Mr. Robot’ Creator Sam Esmail Might Pen ‘Star Wars’ Anthology Script

Apr 22, 2017

Some interesting intel came to Omega Underground yesterday and we had to sit on it for a little bit before posting it.

Now, we’ve had two separate sources telling us Lucasfilm is looking to have Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail write a Star Wars anthology film. They’re claiming that he’s taken pitch meetings (like many others have over the last two years) with the studio and the project they believe is likely the Kenobi movie.

This could be the first word of actual development on an Obi-Wan Kenobi anthology project which currently has a large amount of fan support behind it.

As far as we know, this might only be a writing gig for Sam Esmail but he’s directed fifteen episodes of Mr. Robot between seasons one and two, along with a couple of films like the indie Comet.

Nobody has mentioned him as a potential director.

Sam’s representation at CAA apparently includes power agent Bryan Lourd. The ex-boyfriend of Carrie Fisher and father to their actress daughter Billie Lourd (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi).

Disney’s Bob Iger has suggested that the next anthology film could be ready for release sometime in 2020 and Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy recently hinted to an official anthology announcement coming this summer.

A Boba Fett film was almost announced at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2015 with a sizzle reel as pointed out by Entertainment Weekly. It also seems to be further in development than a potential Kenobi project as Kathleen Kennedy called it a “high priority”.

Have you seen this:

“Don’t worry: Boba Fett is a high priority on our list, please wait.”

“It’s still one of the stories that we absolutely want to tell,” she says. “There is a lot of innovative technology in and around what it is we’re doing with that story, so for a lot of reasons, we were comfortable postponing that. But we’re definitely still developing it.”

This could mean that Fett could be ready for 2020 and that Kenobi might not even get a release until 2021 or 2022, giving Lucasfilm and writers (even a busy one like Sam Esmail) plenty of time to pen a script.

Rogue One director Gareth Edwards had revealed an interest in seeing the project happen and actor Ewan McGregor has repeatedly reaffirmed his interest in reprising the role in almost every interview he does.

Here’s what Edwards had to say.

“To be honest, Rogue One is the period I love. It’s connecting to the original New Hope. If someone made other films in that era – and I don’t necessarily think this is happening, I have no inside knowledge – but that desire to see Obi-Wan Kenobi. Tattooine, basically, I love. As a kid I remember wanting to grow up there; anything in that “Original Trilogy” era I am just besotted with, and it’s just like going back home to your childhood.”

“It would be fun to film that story now I’m older,” McEwan explained, “I’d be the right age. I’m forty-five, Alec Guinness was what, sixty? I could do two of them (laughs)!”

“I hope that they’re going to explore different genres under the Star Wars banner. And one of those could be an Obi-Wan Kenobi feature film. Or two! The Obi-Wan Kenobi Story Part 1 and Part 2!”

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last year, Esmail brought up a comparison between Mr. Robot and Star Wars.

Constantine is Coming to HBO Max

“I’m going to keep going with this Star Wars thing. Maybe it’s subconscious; I don’t know. I’ve looked back on the second season and I’ve seen a lot of similarities with The Empire Strikes Back, in terms of Luke/Elliot going away and isolating themselves, while their sister is out there and battling the evil empire. I think this is the return of Elliot.”

It was reported back in December by The Hollywood Reporter that Sam was eyeing a television mini-series based on Fritz Lang’s iconic 1927 silent German science fiction film Metropolis. The original film was an obvious inspiration to George Lucas on Star Wars and likely is where the design of C-3P0 came from.

We reached out to Sam’s camp via a third party but wasn’t able to get an official response in time of this post.
