Rumour: Actress Zendaya Reportedly Playing Mary Jane In ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

Aug 19, 2016

Up-and-coming teenage actress Zendaya was one of the first to join the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming. When her casting was announced, details on her role were scarce, all fans had to go on was that Zendaya bagged a lead role and would play a character called Michelle.

Now a report from Elmayimbe over at The Wrap claims the Disney starlet is actually playing Spider-Man’s love interest Mary Jane Watson in the Marvel and Sony’s reboot.

Mary Jane is one of the most beloved character in comics, she is a Caucasian redhead and has a long history with Peter Parker, eventually becoming his better half.

I cannot wait to see what Zendaya will do in the role, and I love that Marvel and Sony are embracing diversity and changing things up by casting a mixed race actress in a predominantly white role.

Check our Zendaya with red hair:

The role of MJ has previously been played by Kirsten Dunst in Sam Raimi’s Spidey trilogy. Fault in Our Stars actress Shailene Woodley was meant to play Mary Jane in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but she was cut from the film.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit screens July 17, 2017
