Ryan Reynolds and Armie Hammer Lead ‘Green Lantern’ Shortlist for Hal Jordan

Jan 20, 2017

Today, The Wrap has released the first shortlist of actors up for the role of Hal Jordan in DC Comics Green lantern Corps movie. The film will have a team-up between the first Green Lantern Hal Jordan and fan-favorite John Stewart as they take on a brand new threat. This comes off of news last week that The Dark Knight and Man of Steel screenwriter David Goyer was hired to pen the script.

The list includes Tom Cruise (Mission Impossible), Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler), Bradley Cooper (The Hangover), Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger) and surprisingly Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern, Deadpool). Joel McHale (Community) has since been added to the shortlist. According to the report, the casting process is still in very early stages.

Apparently, Tom Cruise is actively pursuing a future comic book movie role. But he may be too tied down with the Jack Reacher and Mission Impossible movie franchises to be considered. He will also star in this year’s The Mummy which will kick off the Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe. Both Bradley Cooper and Jake Gyllenhaal have been fan favorite’s for the role even before 2011’s Green Lantern. Also, Armie Hammer is being considered by the studio for the role. Which makes sense considering just last week the actor started following DC Films co-head Geoff Johns as well as liking the producers Green Lantern Corps announcement on Twitter.

Lastly, and the most surprising is that the studio is just considering bringing back Ryan Reynolds in the role of Hal Jordan. Reynolds played Hal Jordan in the critically panned Green Lantern movie back in 2011. Even though most fans don’t blame Reynolds for his performance; considering him the few bright aspects of the film. The actors popularity has shot up since the debut of 2016’s massive hit Deadpool. However, it would seem highly unlikely Reynolds would ever return for Green Lantern since Deadpool is his prized possession going forward.

If the studio is already looking to cast Green Lantern I wouldn’t be surprised if the character shows up in another DC movie before Green Lantern Corps which doesn’t come out until 2020. Also, if the studio is looking to bring back any actor from 2011’s Green Lantern they need to consider bringing back Mark Strong as Sinestro. He was a massive highlight of the film. And unfortunately never got to become his evil self to the planned sequel.

Green Lantern Corps hits July 24th, 2020
