Should ‘New Mutants’ Sever Ties To ‘First Class’ Trilogy?
We learned yesterday that Fox is now planning on shooting New Mutants in the spring.
They have a couple of months to figure everything out script-wise before cameras start rolling and we have a suggestion that we hope Josh Boone, Fox and producer Simon Kinberg listen to.
Please keep New Mutants as far away from the X-Men: First Class/X-Men: Apocalypse timeline as possible, this could be a way leave the Apocalypse cast room for future films to be made. I’m not entirely convinced they need New Mutants to be set in the past.
I’m grateful that Boone is writing the script, but I think it’s beyond weird that Kinberg wants this film to be set in the 1990s. Considering, it’s an era we all now assume that this new X-Men lineup established in Apocalypse would be active. Creating an entirely new lineup seems really out of place and a little unfair to that cast.
I feel like the 90’s setting might be better saved for the retelling of The Phoenix Saga removing the need to have New Mutants connected to the First Class era.
Even more puzzling is when there’s talk Kinberg and the studio “reconfiguring” the main X-Men films, now that Bryan Singer isn’t returning. Apocalypse‘s underwhelming domestic box office numbers couldn’t even match 2000’s X-Men.
There also seems to be a lot of uncertainty with that side of the franchise with Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy‘s contracts being up and the studio having to renegotiate them for a hefty sum. We have no idea if some or all will want to return for more films and if Fox is willing to pay-up.
I personally, wouldn’t want a New Mutants movie to suddenly revolve around Magneto and Mystique. I’m sure a lot of people feel the same way and it might be smarter just to keep the film far away from the First Class era entirely, allowing it to be it’s own thing.
Boone has somewhat confirmed the lineup will consist of Wolfsbane, Magik, Sunspot, Cannonball, Mirage and Warlock.
When Simon Kinberg stated New Mutants was set in the 1990’s and will include Xavier this was back in May, when the studio thought they had a slam-dunk with Apocalypse.
With the studio’s new priority to get Deadpool 2, Deadpool 3 and X-Force together, having it connect to that side of the franchise might be more appealing to Fox and audiences.
Deadpool is one of the most well received X-Men films since the original two and currently is the most successful in the franchise. Luckily, Deadpool never had connections to either the original or First Class trilogies making it a perfect introduction point for New Mutants, if Fox wants to reboot X-Men for a third time (has been rumored for a while now).
New Mutants could easily be the PG-13 arm of Deadpool and X-Force. I don’t think many would object to seeing Colossus and Negasonic playing a role either. They could still include Xavier (is around in Deadpool as mentioned by Colossus) and Storm they’d likely just have to cast new actors to play the older versions, another chance for the studio to reboot things.
Cable was introduced in New Mutants #87 and could play a major role in future films, why the Cable casting is very important to Fox. Deadpool and Domino were also introduced in the pages of New Mutants another reason to have the film connect to X-Force/Deadpool films.
Summers could take the place of Wolverine as the tactical mentor/leader of the group.
Here’s a quote from Rob Liefeld on Cable’s creation.
“I was given a directive to create a new leader for the New Mutants. There was no name, no description besides a ‘man of action’, the opposite of Xavier. I created the look, the name, much of the history of the character. After I named him Cable, Bob suggested Quinn and Louise had Commander X.”
Speaking of Wolverine, there’s a second entry point for New Mutants and this also makes a lot of sense. Another way to go could be setting it after the events of Logan.
While Deadpool allows for a reboot with it’s exclusion of other timelines, Logan pretty much paints the picture that a majority of mutants are dead alluding the X-Men are too. This bleak future could be reversed if we see mutants start to resurface and in need of guidance could turn to Xavier (if he survives) and Cable leading to the formation of New Mutants.
We’ve assumed that X-23 will be the new Wolverine moving forward and having her apart of New Mutants (older or younger) could work and help further setup X-Force in the process.
Let’s be honest, at this point it’s fair to say fans want to see more films connected to or helping setup X-Force, a lot more than they do a 90’s X-Men film that should be the Phoenix Saga instead.
I believe that New Mutants should have stronger ties to Deadpool and Logan than the First Class trilogy, severing ties to the latter.
