There had been some speculation that Sigourney Weaver could be prepping for a Marvel role, and it turns out that was true, but not for their cinematic universe due to her large commitments to Avatar sequels.
Instead it was announced by New York Comic-Con that Weaver will instead play an unnamed villain in The Defenders series, which begins shooting this November.
Weaver has a connection of sorts to the Marvel Netflix universe via Cabin In The Woods director Drew Goddard, who originally developed the first season of Daredevil. Avengers‘ Joss Whedon also happened to c0-write Cabin along with Weaver’s last installment of the Alien franchise with Alien: Resurrection. Those connections some of the Marvel creatives might have led to her joining the Marvel family.
Sigourney is no stranger to prestige genre projects with her role in Aliens landing her a Best Actress Oscar nomination.
Here’s the official press release from Marvel.
“Marvel is honored to have an actress of her caliber and status join what is already our biggest show ever! She is by definition a class act,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television.
“Sigourney Weaver, what more is there to say,” said Cindy Holland,Vice President of original content at Netflix. “She’s a formidable actress and we are thrilled to have her join our remarkable cast alongside Charlie, Krysten, Mike and Finn.”
