Squarumon has sent his monsters to inhabit the realm after a love scorned, and you are the undead that can stop them. Skellboy Refractured was right in my wheelhouse, and I love UmaikiGames for it.

You play Skippy the multi-functional hero that can utilize the bodies of his enemies and some pillaged swag to up his game throughout his quest to rid the kingdom of evil once and for all.

I’m a big fan of RPGs and fantasy. Therefore, the story for this game gave me quite a few chuckles at the cheeky nature of the cute humor.

I didn’t get very far into the story because I wanted to get this review out. In all honesty, I got stuck in the story trying to get through the torture chamber too soon without a pumpkin light with nary a wiki in sight (or so I thought), but that is a story for another time. I did wish there had been earlier development of the story but felt that it wasn’t enough to detract from the game much.

The game-play was easy for these old fingers to learn, but challenging enough for the game to not be too easy. I love when it shows you what to press and when in the beginning, and Skellboy Refractured did that beautifully. One of my favorite mechanics is the inventory. On most RPGs, the inventory is on your body. In Skellboy Refractured, it IS your body. I loved trading out my head for a zombie head only to discover it took away a life cube in the process.

I choose games based on the art first and the description second. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that I gave the art full marks on this one. I loved the pseudo squared off world full of more detail than initially believed. The music didn’t quite live up to the art’s standards. I did like it though as it was reminiscent of 80’s video games. It had enough variation to not get overly repetitive. However, I did find myself turning it down after a bit as the effects and music got a little old.

Overall, I’m very happy with Skellboy Refractured and will be returning to it frequently. My children also enjoyed playing it as a second player can drop in and out at any time. This game has been one of the better perks of being a GWW contributor!
