Hollywood Reporter picked-up on some quotes from writer-director Kevin Smith on Mallrats 2 which he made on the radio show Rock102 Mornings with Shmonty & Carolina. Smith confirmed a script is currently being written and will be ready to shoot around May 2016.
“It’s half a script right now, and we’re pulling our loot together. We’ve got up until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we’re going to be shooting.”
“Lately I’ve been doing this thing where I’m like, ‘Do you want to do what’s good for your career, or do you just want to have fun?’ ” he continued. “Nobody’s clamoring for a Mallrats sequel, but I would love to make one. It’s been like 20 years.”
Smith is about to begin production on Clerks 3, and I’m sure he’s going to be placing Mallrats easter eggs in the film. His films Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back are all connected into one cinematic universe.
I think the best way forward with a sequel would be to focus on Jason Lee‘s Brodie and his comic book shop, which might be now located in mall or is investing in saving it. It was established in Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back that Brodie now owns a successful comic book shop Brodie’s Secret Stash.
Smith did one thing right with Clerks 2 when basically getting rid of all the actors who hadn’t been working consistantly and hiring new ones. The dudes who played Randall and Dante kind of needed to be in the film even if they had been sitting around for years waiting for Smith to put them in a movie. Although, he stupidly didn’t have the characters in an office environment which would have been a bit more interesting.
This means we could be seeing a bunch of actors not returning. People I’d love to see come back are Michael Rooker, and of course Stan “The Man” Lee. I know a lot of people might want to see Jeremy London return but he hasn’t done anything recognizable since 7th Heaven.
It’s guaranteed that Kevin Smith and Jason Mews would be reprising their iconic roles has Jay and Silent Boy.
It might be cool to have Will Farrell return as a mall security guard in a small role or cameo, to link the film to the expanded Jay and Silent Bob cinematic universe. Will might be a bit harder to wrangle these days but I’m sure he’d be open for a cameo.
My dream-team for the new cast would include legit comedians T.J. Miller (Silicon Valley, Deadpool, Big Hero 6) , Jillian Bell (Workaholics, 22 Jump Street), Hannibal Buress (Louie, Neighbors), and Ilana Glazer (Broad City).
Are you interested in a sequel to Mallrats and who would you want to see in it?
