Sony Reviving ‘Venom’ Movie With ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Writer Dante Harper

Mar 4, 2016

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are reviving their Venom movie at Sony/Columbia Pictures.

They’ve hired screenwriter Dante Harper, who did rewrites on Christopher McQuarrie’s Edge of Tomorrow script for the Doug Liman directed film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

In the report, they’re quick to point out the film won’t actually have direct ties to the upcoming Spider-Man reboot and could actually be it’s own standalone film, as they hope will develop the character into his own franchise.

It’s unknown if we’ll be getting the traditional Eddie Brock version, or the wounded-warrior turned gunslinger Flash Thompson take on Venom.

The reasoning behind severing ties with Spider-Man, might to allow a darker take on the character possibly an R-rating, which is understandable for the violent character. An anti-hero not unlike Wolverine, Deadpool and Blade, Venom is willing to kill his enemies.

The original writers for the Venom film were Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Let’s not forget that Avi did produce the Blade franchise.
