Sony held its annual E3 press conference on Monday, June 13, 2016. The entire conference ran about 75 minutes and showed off some gorgeous footage of new titles as well as some games that were introduced to us last year. If you want to watch the conference in its entirety then check out the video below. The actual conference starts at the 30 minute mark.
The show began with an orchestra playing a selection that made it feel as if an army was marching to battle. Soon after a PS4 game was revealed. Sony Santa Monica is working on God of War. In the footage we see a boy going on his first hunt. This boy is guided by a bearded Kratos, the iconic character returns but this time is wielding a mythical ax. The two things that stood out to me the most about this GoW game were the RPG elements shown and how vast the world looks. I can’t help but wonder if Playstation 4 gamers are going to get an open world God of War game this time around. There was no information regarding when we can expect the game to launch, but I have a feeling it will be around the same time the PS4 Neo hits store shelves. I tweeted to Sony Santa Monica telling them I can wait as long as necessary to experience this game.
The next game shown was a title by Sony Bend Studio, Days Gone. In the footage the main character, Deacon St. John searches for a friend. When he finds him he also sees the massive horde of Freaks intent on feeding. This zombie enemy group acts as one in their pursuit and Deacon has to act quickly to stay alive. Days Gone is described as an open-world action-adventure game, set in the Pacific Northwest, two years after a global pandemic. There was no mention of a release date, but for more about the game check out a blog post by John Garvin, creative director of Bend Studio.
A trailer for Detroit: Become Human, Quantic Dream’s next game was also shown. An android, Daniel, took a little girl hostage and another android, Connor, is sent in to negotiate after several humans were killed. What intrigued me was the mother’s reaction when she realized Connor was an android. She was no longer confident that her daughter would be saved. I’m quite sure it was because Daniel was supposed to serve & protect the same family. In true Quantic Dream fashion this is a game that revolves around player choice. I have enjoyed past games and I expect this one to be as good or better than Heavy Rain or Beyond: Two Souls. I hope the release date is announced soon.
Some trailers for PS VR games were shown including Resident Evil: Biohazard, Star Wars: Battlefront X-Wing VR Mission, and Batman Arkham VR. It was announced that 50 VR games would be available from the US launch date (October 13, 2016) to the end of the year. While VR gaming should immerse the player into video games even further, I am not going to expand on this portion of the conference.
The project Hideo Kojima has been working on for the PS4 was revealed. Death Stranding starring Norman Reedus, looks both amazing & compelling. The trailer shows a nude Reedus wearing a set of handcuffs attached to one of his hands. He is physically connected to a newborn baby, who vanishes leaving behind small hand prints on Norman’s legs. Two questions that should be answered once the game is released are: How did Norman get to the island he seems to be stranded on & who or what is controlling the five vehicles revealed at the end of the trailer. Just like the God of War announcement I can wait as long as necessary to experience this game. I look forward to reading more about these two games over all the others revealed.
In closing more footage was shown for Horizon: Zero Dawn, which will release on February 28, 2017. The Last Guardian will release on October 25, 2016. Insomniac is currently working on a Spider-Man game for PS4. The iconic franchise Crash Bandicoot (Crash 1, 2, & Warped) is being fully remastered from the ground up and will come to PS4. Of these games I am certainly getting the Crash games, The Last Guardian, and Horizon: Zero Dawn.
