Sony’s ‘Venom’ Spinoff Eyeing Fall Production Start

Mar 26, 2017

Recently, Sony threatened us with releasing their long-gestating Spider-Man spinoff featuring anti-hero Venom, dating the film’s release for next October.

The character is an alien symbiote that needs a human host to survive. In return, the alien vests its victim with incredible powers.

New production information from My Entertainment World we’ve spotted suggests a fall production start. This makes sense since most comic book films have a year turnaround schedule.

Although, without a location set and director hired we can’t say with confidence it will start this fall. We have no word on a director or casting, but work has been underway for years on a script.

Deadpool screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick had been originally hired to pen a script, but their draft was ultimately shelved when Hunger Games’ Gary Ross got involved. Edge of Tomorrow and Alien: Covenant’s Dante Harper was also asked to do rewrites on the script.

For whatever reason, Sony has seemingly scrapped both drafts and is looking to have the Jumanji reboot writers Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner to take another crack at it. We’re not entirely excited that Sony is bringing back Pinkner, who was involved with Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Jeff isn’t the only holdover from the disastrous Amazing Spider-Man 2, as producers Avi Arad and Matt are said to be involved. We can only expect their mediocre ideas will not help things when there is talk these spinoffs won’t be connected to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe, unlike Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

Seems extremely odd that Sony isn’t looking for Marvel’s help on these spinoffs, when they obviously need it considering their terrible decision making over the last couple of years.

We’ve been noticing that a majority of the writers involved have also worked on Dwayne Johnson projects including G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Jumaji, along with Pain and Gain. The original incarnation of Eddie Brock was a bulky weightlifter, and seems like a good fit for Dwayne as it likely wouldn’t conflict with his other comic book roles such Black Adam and Doc Savage.

Venom is set for release on October 5th, 2018.
