SPECULATION: Will Nick Fury Get Involved In ‘Captain Marvel’ Because Of The Kree?

Jul 9, 2017

With our report of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury joining Captain Marvel confirmed by Deadline. We figured we’d try to figure out how Fury could factor into this film with a mentor role or smaller.

With that in mind, I think it reoccurred who the villains just might be and how Fury might get involved.

In concept artwork that a gaggle of the press was shown some months back, Carol was seen fighting a giant robot in one piece of artwork shown. My automatic thought was a Kree Sentry, which Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) has faced in multiple comics. There is an expectation that his comic lore and rogues will be handed over to Carol to give her a little more to work with over the next couple of movies.

Here’s how Nerdist reported on the image.

The third image showed her fighting off a something in a giant metal suit with a helmet; the creature looked almost like the Kree sentries. Between her hands, glowing red energy–a.k.a. Captain Marvel’s energy projection and absorption powers. According to screenwriter Nicole Perlman, Carol Danvers’ backstory is going to be different than the one we know from the comics, but if this concept art is to be believed, the Kree are still going to make an appearance one way or another.

TINY SPOILER AHEAD

On the Fury front, it’s possible that Spider-Man: Homecoming may have teased a greater connection to both Infinity War and Captain Marvel that a lot of people might have missed in all of the splendor of that film.

In the scene at the Avengers compound, there is a new ship that takes off into the clouds, which I think most just assumed was a new Quinjet. Except for Stark comments on the specialness of this one. My own assumption is that this thing is heading into space, possibly to a new base, SWORD (or an MCU version of it) perhaps?

Stark’s father’s legacy was founding SHIELD and it might make sense for Tony to regroup with Fury and possibly create a new organization similar to SWORD since he’s now working on the side of the global governments.

This might be where Fury might come into the play here. As SHIELD has intimate knowledge (via Agents of SHIELD, not exactly MCU canon) of the Kree and possibly want to investigate their intentions. Since SHIELD is ultimately gone in the MCU (not in the Marvel TV universe) it’s possible Fury has been developing a new group (SWORD?) to fight cosmic threats which pose a greater danger than HYDRA.

The Kree were also key players in the first Guardians of The Galaxy movie.

Maybe their investigation or diplomacy is seen as a hostile act to the war-mongering aliens?

The Kree Empire would make interesting foes and have a direct connection to the origin of both Captain Marvels. Even without Ronan The Accuser, Kree teams like Starforce or Lunatic Legion could be sent to Earth as a Strikeforce before an invasion and ultimately conquering Earth while the Avengers are possibly off-world dealing with Thanos.

Anyways, I’m sure we’ll learn official details about Captain Marvel at D23 Expo and San Deigo Comic-Con in the next couple of weekends but we should assume the Kree are involved in some way.

Captain Marvel begins filming this January and is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
