In a rare bit of unexpected news before the release of the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Homecoming, actor Tom Holland revealed an unknown easter egg and connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The actor, who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the upcoming film was being interviewed today and revealed that in the 2010 film Iron Man 2, young Peter Parker was there. The scene he mentioned was this one with a young boy in an Iron Man mask who refuses to run as the rogue Hammer Bots are destroying the Stark Expo. As he is being targeted by one of the bots, the young boy raises his arm while wearing a fake repulsor and the bot is taken out by the timely arrival of Iron Man himself.

As cute a story as it is, there is evidence that it is completely possible.

The Timing

Iron Man 2 was released in 2010. With Peter Parker being a teenager in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the timing works out age-wise.

The Location

For whatever reason (I refuse to believe they thought that far ahead), even though the first Iron Man movie took place in California, Iron Man 2 and specifically Tony Stark decided to have the Stark Expo in Queens, New York. Marvel fans; Which Marvel comics character grew up in Queens? That’s right, Spider-Man.

Tony Stark

In Captain America: Civil War, Tony Stark knew about Peter Parker and his abilities ahead of his recruiting him for his team. As no one else seemed to know anything about him, it’s safe to assume that Stark remembered the brave little boy and kept an eye on him. He, or one of his AI’s, might have put the pieces together after the mysterious appearance of the young vigilante and given Stark a heads up.

This might explain the almost paternal feeling he has for the kid. A feeling bred from familiarity?

So far, neither Sony or Marvel are scrambling to retract the statement or clear it up. As it doesn’t really effect the overall plot of Homecoming, I doubt they will. If anything, it adds a cute dimension to the scene in Iron Man 2 and is a safe callback for Homecoming.
