The Wrap reports that three actresses are on an early shortlist for a new female role in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII. They include Gina Rodriguez, Tatiana Maslany and newcomer Olivia Cooke. Maslany, has already been in the mix before for a Star Wars lead and will likely get huge support but I won’t count-out Gina and Olivia, who could commit to a 2-7 picture deal.
You might remember that Tatiana was a finalist for the lead role in Rogue One, that instead went to Felicity Jones.
It’s possible this new role could be as big, if not bigger, as speculation has already begun that the part could be Jaina Solo, or a cinematic version of Han’s daughter. The interesting angle is that they’re doing chemistry readings with John Boyega, who essentially could be the male lead of these next two films.
