Stephen Daldry In Early Talks To Direct ‘Kenobi’; No Screenwriter Attached?

Aug 17, 2017

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry is in early talks to direct the Obi Wan Kenobi spinoff film for Lucasfilm.

Sources say talks are at the earliest of stages and that the project has no script. If a deal makes, Daldry would oversee the development and writing with Lucasfilm brass. It’s not known at this stage if Ewan McGregor will reprise his role.

Omega Underground previously reported that the studio was considering hiring Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail to write the script for a Kenobi solo film. We pointed out at the time Sam wasn’t being mentioned as a potential director.

We pointed out at the time Sam wasn’t being mentioned as a potential director.

It’s clearly odd that a screenwriter isn’t named here in the trade report as we would expect that one would be on board even before a director is hired. Although, they do mention Stephen will be involved with the film’s development including the writing of it and it’s in the very “early stages”.

Despite we learned of Lucasfilm putting together ideas for the solo film months ago.

It’s starting to look like Kenboi will be indeed our 2020 Star Wars release.
