Thandie Newton’s ‘Han Solo’ Character Connected To Darth Vader/Empire?

Oct 2, 2017

Today, during Han Solo reshoots director Ron Howard revealed on Twitter the first look at Thandie Newton in costume as her unnamed Star Wars character.

This is solid confirmation that Newton will be playing a human role in the anthology film, which has us a bit curious if she is playing an established character or someone created for the film.

There is one detail we can gather from this photo and that is Thandie possibly has an Imperial patch on her jacket shoulder which could mean she’s ranking member of the Empire and most likely TIE Fighter pilot. It would explain Ron is trying his best to cover it with his hand.

This wouldn’t be terribly shocking with previous rumblings from ThatHashtagShow that Darth Vader could be making a return.

Sloane with Darth Vader.

There are a couple of newly introduced female characters in the novels and comics that worked for the Empire and specifically Vader. They include Rae Sloane, Ciena Ree, and Doctor Chelli Lona Aphra.

If the character is indeed an Imperial pilot I’m leaning towards Ciena Ree (pictured in the header image).

Sana Starros

Another option could be this character is undercover wearing an Imperial uniform for a mission. If that’s the case, this might mean Thandie is playing fellow smuggler Sana Starros, who has a history with Han. Starros also happens to be one hell of a pilot and we don’t know much about her origin, it’s possible she spent some time in service of the Empire only to leave, not unlike Galen Erso from Rogue One.

Han Solo is still set for release on May 25th, 2018.
