It’s official! Ryan Coogler, the esteemed director of Fruitvale Station and Creed, is directing the Black Panther solo film that comes out February 16, 2018 from Marvel Studios. This film is set to star Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther and potentially Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaw.
Here is what Marvel Executive Producer Kevin Feige had to say about Coogler joining the team.
“We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family,” said producer Kevin Feige. “The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct ‘Black Panther.’ Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we’ve found the perfect director to bring T’Challa’s story to life.”
The Black Panther movie is extremely important because of the potential cultural impact the movie could have. Since the Blade trilogy in the early 2000’s, we haven’t seen a big budget comic book movie with a black lead actor. Black Panther is such a great character not only because of his importance culturally but his power; though he has no enhancements, he is the best fighter in the marvel universe in my eyes. But you aren’t here to listen to why a Black Panther movie is important, you want to know why everyone is freaking out about Ryan Coogler. My answer is watch the first boxing scene in Creed. It is one shot, no editing, and some memorizing choreography. Imagine bringing this style to a high action film like Black Panther, the fight scenes alone could be a huge draw for the film. I was already really excited for a Black Panther movie and with Coogler at the helm, my excitement only increases.
