Ever since Archie Comics announced that the CW had green-lit the pilot for the live-action series Riverdale, Archie fans have been wondering who will be cast as the famous gang from Riverdale. The wait is over as Casting for major characters, such as Archie Andrews, Jughead Jones and Betty Cooper, has been announced.
KJ Apa will be playing Archie Andrews, who’s character is being described as “an intense, conflicted teen, a boyish high school sophomore who got pumped up over the summer working construction and is now juggling the interest of several girls, as well as trying to balance his passion for writing and performing music — against the wishes of his father and his football coach.”
Cole Sprouse (The Sweet Life of Zack and Cody) will be playing Jughead Jones who is the “heartthrob with a philosophical bent and former best friend of Archie Andrews.” It is unknown if the TV version of Jughead will be asexual like his comic book counterpart, but we can hope they stick to the source material. Lili Reinhart (Surviving Jack) has been cast as Betty Cooper, a “sweet, studious, eager-to-please and wholesome with a huge crush on her longtime best friend, Archie. Tired of being the perfect daughter, student, sister, etc., she turns to her new friend, Veronica, for life advice — much to the consternation of her emotionally brittle mother.”
Speaking of Veronica Lodge, Camila Mendes has been cast, and her character is being described as a “silver-tongued high school sophomore who returns to Riverdale from New York, eager to reinvent herself after a scandal involving her father.” Yep, thats Betty alright. Madelaine Petsch (The Curse of Sleeping Beauty) has been cast as the antagonistic Cheryl Blossom. Cheryl is “a manipulative mean girl who kills with kindness but she recently lost her twin brother in a mysterious accident.”
For you Josie and the Pussycat fans, Ashleigh Murray will be playing the role of Josie McCoy who is being described as “a gorgeous, snooty and ambitious girl who is the lead singer for popular band Josie and the Pussycats. She has zero interest in recording any songs written by fellow teen Archie.” Fred Andrews, Archie’s father will be played by Luke Perry (90201) who returns to his teen drama roots but as a father this time. Fred is being described as “easygoing and the owner of a construction firm who is hoping his son, who worked for him all summer, will someday take over the family business.”
The one-hour drama will be written by Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and produced by Warner Brothers Studios and Berlanti Productions and has been described as a subversive take on the classic Archie mythos. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter, Jon Goldwater, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa serve as executive producers.
The live-action series offers a bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring small-town life and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade. The show will focus on the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich socialite Veronica Lodge, and will include the entire cast of characters from the comic books—including Archie’s rival, Reggie Mantle, and his slacker best friend, Jughead Jones.
Popular gay character Kevin Keller will also play a pivotal role. In addition to the core cast, Riverdale will introduce other characters from Archie Comics’ expansive library, including Josie and the Pussycats.
