Today, Variety announced that The CW is moving forward with a reboot series based on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. This upcoming adaption is expected (but not confirmed) to be set within the same universe as their other hit show Riverdale. Something the showrunners of Riverdale hinted at earlier this year. This will be a dark take on the classic comic where Sabrina deals with demons as well as The Occult. Something that late 90’s sitcom starring Melissa Joan Hart stirred away from on ABC.
The potential series would be based on the Archie Comics series “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” which reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult, and witchcraft. The series is described as being tonally in the vein of horror classics like “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Exorcist,” and will see Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the daylight world humans inhabit.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa of Archie Comics well help write and produce the Sabrina series. As well as Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater who all helped produce Riverdale will return for Sabrina.
