Yesterday, Disney and Marvel Studios severed their working relationship with director James Gunn after almost decades old disturbing tweets were unearthed by an Alt-Right group looking for a reprisal for Gunn’s political stances leading to his ultimate firing.
Now, there comes the talk of what does Marvel do with Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.3 and the overall vision for the cosmic corner of the MCU in Phase Four?
There is now growing support for Kiwi writer-director Taika Waititi to save the project and potentially oversee the cosmic side of the MCU. He’s proved with Thor: Ragnarok that he can strike a similar tone while adding his own visual flare.
Ultimately, we suspect that Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow set to be helmed by recently hired Aussie director Cate Shortland will mostly likely be given the Guardians’ production schedule and release date as there is a good chance they’ll want a completely new script to remove James Gunn completely from the project.
Taika is also currently filming his WWII satire Jojo Rabbit in Prague which happens to star Johansson, which could mean he’ll be a little too busy with production and then post-production to jump into filming anytime soon which was originally eyeing a start in January-February. There was also talk he might direct Warner Bros’ live-action Akira film but has yet to be made official.
The fate of Guardians 3 will likely be announced within the next couple of weeks.
