Third ‘Star Wars’ Spin-Off Film Slated for 2020 Release

Sep 21, 2016

Today, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced to investors several plans for their Star Wars property moving forward for the next decade. Apparently the CEO has already seen a rough cut of this years Rogue One and it looks very promising. Since this is the very first “spin-off” Star Wars film ever the company is being very cautious when it comes to staying true to the original saga’s spirit. The next spin-off that will start filming next year is Chris Miller & Phil Lord (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie) Han Solo origin film.

After that a third spin-off has always been rumored but never confirmed.  However, Bob Iger did confirm as writer has already been brought on board to pen the third spin-off film. He also goes onto confirm the studio is aiming for a 2020 release.

While Josh Trank’s Boba Fett spin-off movie was canned after the trouble the director caused on the set of The Fantastic Four no one knows what this new spin-off could be. Actor Ewan McGregor has been very vocal on returning for a Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off film during the character’s time on Tatoonie before the events of A New Hope.

I’d very much like to do one too. I think the story between Episode III and Episode IV, I think there’s a story there. I think that’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, if there is one. The one that bridges my Obi-Wan Kenobi and Alec’s Obi-Wan Kenobi because there’s a—I don’t know how long he’s in the desert there, but it’s got to be twenty or thirty years.

The actor even returned to voice a single line in Star Wars: The Force Awakens during Rey’s force vision. While this would be great to see the actor return this is far from confirmed.

Hopefully, we should be getting more information on the upcoming spin-off very shortly…
